Things are more or less on track so far but that doesn’t mean everything’s quite gone to plan. Last night I didn’t get to bed until 2.30 and I think it was closer to 3 before I got to sleep. I made up for this a bit by setting my alarm for 8.30, rather than 8 – so I’ve had between 5.5 and 6 hours sleep. – Close enough.
When I first got up I was very, very, tempted to return to bed. However, amazingly, willpower kicked in and I actually stayed up. I don’t feel that tired right now really… I’m cold, and I have a strange kind of upper stomach ache which I think is muscle related – neither of which are likely to be related to this whole sleeping less thing, but, I don’t think it’s helping much either. On the plus side though, other than that, I’m pretty good.
With the early rise this morning, hitting bed at 2am tonight/tomorrow morning should be relatively easy – the difficulty will come in making it that far, and of course – in getting up at 8 again tomorrow. I figure probably Monday or Tuesday will be the hardest, then hopefully after that i’ll slowly start getting used to it.
Expect at least one more post some time today…

Okay here’s the deal.
Lately I’ve been sleeping too much. It’s one thing to go to bed late and wake up late, or sleep in on the weekends… but i’ve been going to bed early and waking up late. 8 hours a day? That’s a light sleep, 10 hours? – moving on to average, and yes it’s not unsual for me to sleep 11, 12 or even up to 14 hours in a given 24 hour period. Rather than being some kind of debilitating medical condition, I think i’m just lazy – i’ve grown into it after having an almost year long vacation – where I didn’t need to get up. It started with going to bed late and waking up late, then it moved on, slowly going to bed earlier, but sleeping longer.
Sometimes, I can’t fall asleep untill 1-3am no matter what time I go to bed, but other times I can be asleep till 10, and not wake up untill midday.
So, it’s time for a change. Rather than doing the sensible thing and slowly waking up earlier each morning I’m qutting sleep cold turkey. Of course not entirely, I’d never make it, but I am cutting back significantly. The target? 6 hours of sleep per night, thats an average of probably 40% less sleep than what im getting currently. The time period has to be one that I can stick to, and that fits into my daily schedule. Currently the best I can come up with is 2am to 8am.
And so, it’s 8.45pm on the first of the nights where I’ll go to bed at 2, and if all goes to plan – wake up tomorrow at 8. The point of this blog is to serve as some external focus as well as to provide some documentation of my attempt, which will hopefully see me with a lot more time on my hands.
For the record, I think I woke up around 10.30 this morning, meaning I haven’t been awake all that long really, but thats not to say I couldn’t do with a nice nap… I really am that lazy.
If this works, I might even cut back further, let’s see what the limit is. But for now 6 is the goal.
